  • Asakusa Temple is located in Taito ku, Tokyo, Japan. It was first built in the 36th year of Emperor Tsuchigu's reign (628 AD) and is said to have been built after fishermen salvaged a statue of Guanyin from the Sumida River. It is the oldest surviving Buddhist temple in Tokyo. The main building of the temple is in Edo style, including the Wind and Thunder God Gate, the Gojo Pagoda (the second tallest Buddhist pagoda in Japan), the main hall, and other major structures. The Thunder Gate was first built in 942 AD and was rebuilt in 1960 after a fire. The giant lanterns hanging from the gate and the 140 meter paved stone shrine inside form a landmark landscape in Tokyo.
